A personal trainer (PT) does more than tell you what exercises to do and when - they are your coach, motivator and movement expert.

PTs ensure clients set realistic and achievable, long- and short-term goals and are there for every step of your journey. They provide support for making your goals a priority and keep you engaged in forming new habits, addressing every concern along the way.

PT sessions can be geared in any way the client needs, and that will look different for every single person. No two goals or clients are the same - your PT will treat you as an individual with unique needs and abilities

Personal training is more than a more detailed gym program, it is practical guidance on a range of complex health and wellbeing challenges.

A Personal Trainer can:

  • Help you recover from joint or muscle strains, tears and sports injuries
  • Work with your physio or Medical Practitioner post-rehabilitation or joint replacement
  • Help manage chronic health conditions such type 2 diabetes or heart disease
  • Provide targeted balance, mobility and stability training
  • Facilitate weight loss or gain
  • Correct postural alignment and muscle imbalances
  • Improve total wellbeing and quality of life
  • Train you in sports-specific strength and conditioning

Personal trainers can help clients to develop habits that extend beyond exercise and the gym, such as better nutrition, recovery and sleep.

Some trainers may also be qualified nutritionists who can also assist with:

  • Individual dietary intake assessment
  • Personalised meal plans and grocery lists
  • Specific diets for individual goals

Many PTs have additional areas of expertise and can train clients specifically in: 

  • The Pilates Method 
  • Yoga and Meditation 
  • Tai Chi

  • Pre- and post-natal exercise

What You Can Expect from Your Personal Trainer 

Assessment and Needs Analysis 

Upon meeting your trainer, you will have a comprehensive needs analysis and biomechanical assessment. This will give your PT valuable knowledge of your movement abilities so they can program your exercises appropriately. They are looking at what you can do, rather than what you can't, and planning to keep you safe. 

Planning for Success 

Together, you and your PT will map out an action plan which will include a set schedule of face-to-face sessions plus work or tasks you will complete on your own. This may include a written program you follow alone or simple tasks such as recovery or mobility work or may incorporate regular sports participation outside of the gym. 

Ongoing Support 

You will have multiple contact points with your trainer in person and via phone or email, and regular opportunities to make adjustments to the plan/schedule along the way. Your PT will always adapt with you- there are no hard and fast rules. Your trainer works with you, and you lead the way.
